Amyloid precursor (APP) processing pathway. This diagram shows the proteolysis of Amyloid-beta precursor protein (APP) by the enzymes β-secretase and ɣ-secretase which are responsible for formation of the N and C terminals, respectively. The α-secretase cleaves between the residues 16 and 17 and prohibits the amyloid formation. Therefore, the amyloid-β can be in 40 or 42 amino acid long chain where the 42 amino acid chain is most likely to be deposited
